Emma Gates is the U.S. Coordinator under contract with the Updated Silvics of North America Project (USNAP)). Emma holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During her time in school, she studied carbon accounting, best management practices, risk assessment, stormwater management, GIS, urban planning, art, and design. Her concentrations in water and climate and minors in geology and studio art help her understand the changing environment. She uses her education and skills to translate that knowledge into a relatable format so that individuals can learn and change with it. Emma's primary work with the Hub is coordinating and tracking a revision to the Silvics of North America to reflect current forestry science, disturbance impacts, and ecosystem services. She also guides new USNAP authors through the rigorous review process for tree species chapters submitted to USNAP on the Scholastica platform.
