Online Adaptation Planning and Practices course (free)

A unique hands-on virtual training to consider the impacts of climate change adaptation responses in real-world natural resource management planning. This seven-week long virtual course is for natural resource management professionals working in forests, urban forests, forested watersheds, and associated natural ecosystems. Participants will receive coaching and feedback while using the Adaptation Workbook to develop their own real-world climate adaptation plan.

Adaptation Planning and Practices Online Course – Summer 2020

During COVID-19 the USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub and Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science are increasing the number of offerings of the online Adaptation Planning and Practices training for natural resource managers. The Summer course will be held during the weeks of June 15 to August 3, 2020.

This unique opportunity provides hands-on training in considering climate change information and identifying adaptation actions for natural resource management professionals working in forests, urban forests, forested watersheds, and associated natural ecosystems. Participants will receive coaching and feedback while using the Adaptation Workbook to develop their own real-world climate adaptation project.

The course consists of seven weekly web sessions, and four participant lead discussion sessions with work time occurring between sessions. Throughout this course, projects will have the opportunity to meet with course leads for project-specific coaching. All lectures are recorded and available to course participants who cannot attend a session.  Through this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify locally-important climate change impacts, challenges, and opportunities
  • Develop specific actions to adapt forests to changing conditions
  • Use the Adaptation Workbook to create their own “climate-informed” projects
  • Better communicate with stakeholders about key climate change impacts, challenges, and opportunities
  • Access post-training support from USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub staff during project planning and implementation
