Evaluating Environmental Impacts of International Development Programs

USDA ARS is working with Cornell University and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of international development programs including Index-Based Livestock (IBLI) and Kenya Livestock Insurance Program (KLIP) being implemented in eastern Africa. Ecologists and applied economists with Cornell and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Kenya serve as co-investigators on the study and provide critical expertise on the IBLI and KLIP programs and their intended purpose to reduce asset risk to pastoralists due to drought. Risk reduction and poverty alleviation are key socio-economic goals that are explicitly linked to enhancing environmental sustainability.
