The USDA Southeast Climate Hub has released the 2021 southern pine beetle outbreak risk forecast using the Southern Pine Beetle Outbreak Model (SPBOM1).

SPBOM 2019 and 2020 forecasts

SPBOM1 uses southern pine beetle spot data, USDA Forest Inventory and Assessment (FIA) vegetation data, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) multi-month weather forecasts to develop the annual outbreak projections.  The 2021 SPB outbreak forecast follows the recent trend of decreasing beetle populations. In 2021, only Crenshaw County, AL is predicted to have significant potential for an outbreak across the region.
