Coastal forests and farmlands in parts of the Southeast are being negatively affected by saltwater intrusion and salinization. Elevated salinity levels cause crop yield declines, coastal forest loss, salt-tolerant invasive species takeover, eutrophication and marsh migration.
With Hurricane Dorian intensifying and forecast to impact Florida and other areas of the southeast US in the next week, the USDA Southeast Climate Hub has consolidated the following resources for agriculture, aquaculture, and forestry, to help producers prepare for and recover from potential hurricane impacts.
The most recent Southern Pine Beetle Outbreak Model (SPBOM1) was released by the USDA Southeast Climate Hub in April 2020. SPBOM1 was designed to forecast the distribution and severity of SPBs, and alert forest managers to areas of high southern pine beetle risk.
