Using food to tell the climate change story

To be effective at communicating about climate change the narrative needs to be relevant to people’s lives.

It’s hard to imagine something more relevant than the foods we love and need. We encounter food several times a day, it is tied to cultures and family traditions, and it can even be emotional. Mike Hoffmann, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, is pursuing the connection between food and climate with a passion. Says Mike, “Our goal is to use the common ground of food to encourage all involved in the food supply chain including farmers, chefs, restauranteurs, retailers, consumers, and others to join forces, tell this story, and create the social change needed to confront climate change.” Simply put — “Melting glaciers are bad enough, but the loss of coffee is downright terrifying.”
